STAYING SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

·         Even though you are rushing and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings and the people around you. If possible, park your car in an area of high pedestrian activity. Avoid remote areas.
·         Lock your car and close the windows, even if you are only gone for a few minutes.
·         Loose change is a meal for a street person; they will break you window for small change.
·         Your cell phone can be sold and reprogrammed and is a sought item of theft.
·         A laptop computer will keep a drug user in a high state, at your expense
·         Lock your packages out-of-sight in the trunk. Place your valuables in the trunk before you get to your destination, not after, the thief may be watching.
·         Be sure and lock your car, many opportunists simply look for unlocked cars.
·         If waiting for a ride from a friend or public transportation, do so in busy, well-lit places.

This information is from excerpts of the book: Be Prepared, Be Safe (Published by Scott Security Source) and is presented here as a public service and brought to you by the advertisers shown. The book is over 50 pages and offers over 500 ways to safe in over 30 situations! Using the coupon # 122014A you can get the eBook version for only $9.99. Visit www.terscott.com/besafe for more details.

·         Consider security film for automobile's windows.
·         Always report a theft to the police.
·         Teach your children to go to the store clerk and ask for help if you become separated while shopping. They should never go to the parking lot or the car alone.
·         Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible; and if the credit card receipt has carbons, ask for these too. Notify issuers immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen, or misused.
·         Be extra careful with purees and wallets. They may become targets for crime in crowded shopping areas, at bus stops, and on public transportation.
·         Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
·         At home, be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. Leave lights and a radio or television on so the house looks occupied. Do not put large displays of holiday gifts in view of your windows or doors.
·         If you go away for the holidays, try to keep your home appearing "lived in": Get an automatic timer for your lights. Have a neighbor watch your home and pick-up your newspapers and mail.
·         If you use lights on your tree, make sure that they are in good working order.
·         Immediately mark your new gifts with your driver's license number, and note all serial numbers, keeping records in a safe place.
·         Remember to be a good friend and neighbor this holiday season: Share these tips with others in your family and neighborhood. Also, why not get your neighborhood together and go caroling. Do not forget the elderly and other people who might be especially lonely during the holidays. Soon, you may wish to form a neighborhood watch group. People helping people, that's what it is all about!
·         And lastly, when hosting a party, find alternative transportation for intoxicated guests; and when going out drinking, please remember: Don't Drink and Drive.

Invest in Pepper Spray? Michael Gravette talks about Pepper Spray as a deterrent to crime.

Michael is referring to an article (it’s linked on our facebook page) about some guy’s words concerning the use of pepper spray. After, you read Michael’s strong words (of which we at www.ScottSecuritySource.com agree), read the article at: Our Facebook page: Be Prepared, Be Safe

Here’s Michael:

I came across an interesting article about the need for
pepper spray on campus.

The guy who wrote it made a comment that was a little
naive.

He said, "The other part of me is extremely offended
that we have become desensitized, and it’s no big deal for
women to be more in need of pepper sprays, instead of
looking to deter such inappropriate, aggressive and
dangerous behavior in possible criminals."

I understand what he means, but he's living in the "can't
we all just get along" fantasy world.

Pepper spray
IS a deterrent to such inappropriate,

aggressive and dangerous behavior.

And, he's so politically correct, that he can't even come out
and call people who commit inappropriate, aggressive and
dangerous behavior, criminals.  No, they are
possible
criminals.

I can guarantee that if every woman on campus carried a
pepper spray and used in on "possible criminals' this would
have a long term effect of deterring possible criminals.

Michael had some pretty strong words and I don’t blame him at all. It seems like the world can be a scary place and this “political correctness” is more like “incorrect BS”. That’s why we offer the book: Be Prepared, Be Safe; it’s Free with anyorder over $100. Just make your purchase and we’ll email your copy to you.

Until next time,

Two men tried to pull the front off a cash machine...

SSS Stupid Criminals

Kentucky: Two men tried to pull the front off a cash machine by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front panel off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off their truck. Scared, they left the scene and drove home…with the chain still attached to the machine…with their bumper still attached to the chain…with their vehicle’s license plate still attached to the bumper.

Mob attacks in Memphis again, Scott Security Source says one protection option is pepper spray

Teenage Mobs attack again in Memphis...

On Friday night at around 10 PM, Sharon Mourning who was accompanied by her daughter Princess was driving in a street near Central High School when a mob of 20 teens attacked her.
Mourning stated that the teenagers were jumping and stumping on her car. The youngsters punched her windows, but were unable to break them.
As she was trapped in the vehicle and feared for her life, she could hear the teens laughing and mocking her as they kicked the car repeatedly.

Use your car (alarm) keys double as a Personal and Home Alarm.

Here's a tip a reader sent in about using your car keys (the car alarm type) to scare intruders into your home by keeping them near your bed:
Put your car keys beside your bed at night.
If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.
This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.

If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

Pepper Spray law changed in Massachusetts.

Can I buy Pepper Spray in Massachusetts? Maybe...

The law in Massachusetts remains the same except for one change.
If you are over 18, you do not need a FID card (firearm license) to
purchase pepper spray anymore.

However, you still need to be licensed to sell it and age needs to be
verified.  That means that people in Massachusetts cannot buy
pepper spray on the Internet and you can't sell it to anyone in MA
on your website.

Investigating a purse snatching...

Do Dummy Cameras deter theft?

According to most reports out there, the answer would be “yes”. Now you as the reader may think that because Scott Security Source is a leading company in Non-Lethal Self Defense products which include security cameras as one of our main products, that we would say this. Well, yes you would be right. But I encourage you to not take my word for it, but to do the research yourself.

A trespasser or burglar won’t be able to tell the difference (unless they are truly a trained professional crook, and yes, they are “out there”) between a dummy camera or fake security camera without an actual camera inside.

Most people who have used a “fake” camera state that they successfully deter theft, robbery, and vandalism and so there are many non-functioning fake cameras such as these found in stores and elsewhere.  Because dummy cameras look just like real surveillance cameras, they can be a very cost effective way of making customers (and intruders) feel as if they’re being watched; voila- effective and affordable security for most situations!

It’s not just the business person who can use a real or fake camera; your home or office can also benefit from dummy cameras and fake surveillance cameras as well.

Why use dummy or fake security cameras? The quick answer is that they are a cost-effective way of preventing crime.  If you’re looking to increase security around your home or office but don’t want to spend money to make this possible, dummy cameras are a good alternative.
My choice would be to mix your dummy cameras with real cameras on a 2 to 1 ratio. So having one live camera and two dummy cams, or 4 dummies and 2 real, etc. you’ll have better security. TIP: This requires some time on your part, but just like we change our smoke alarms on a regular basis, consider switching  your live camera with one of your dummy cams every once in a while, perhaps writing it on a calendar so you know when you’ve done it. Depending on your situation however, you may have one “hot spot” where you’ll always need a camera. In that case, consider another live camera. Also, when you are planning your business budget, designate funds that can go toward your safety and security needs.

Our thought here at Scott Security Source is that it’s always a good idea to have security cameras protecting you, live or dummy cams. Intruders and would be thieves in your store, office or home usually move on or think twice before pocketing something, because they don’t want to risk getting caught on tape.

Good news about our Dummy Cameras:

Does your child know home address and phone number? Here are 7 Ways to Protect your Child.

7 Ways to Protect Your Child
from the book:
Be Prepared, Be Safe by Scott Security Source

1.    Never leave children alone; not at home, in a vehicle, at play, or anywhere.

2.    Define what a STRANGER is. Let your kids know that just because they see someone everyday (e.g. mailman, paperboy, neighbor, etc.) it does not mean these people are not strangers.

3.    Teach your children their full name, your name, full address, and phone number, including area codes. Teach them how to use a phone.

4.    Teach your children the "What if...?" Game, making up different dangerous situations that they might encounter and helping them play out what they would do in that situation.

5.    Take the time to talk to your children and be alert to any noticeable changes in their behavior or attitude toward an adult or teenager; it may be a sign of sexual abuse.

6.    Set up procedures with your child's school or day care center as to whom the child will be released to other than yourself, and what notification procedure they are to follow if the child does not show up on time.

7.    Teach your children that their body is private and no one has the right to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable. If anyone touches them in a wrong way they should: SAY NO, GET AWAY, and TELL SOMEONE they trust.

Preventing Rape, a few ideas from Scott Security Source.

This is from the soon to be published book: Be Prepared, Be Safe. The entire book is free (in pdf. version) with a purchase of $100 or more at: www.scottsecuritysource.com.

Here is how one can be prepared to Avoid Rape. This isn't all of the answers and I invite your comments after the article if you have other ideas or stories to share.

Preventing Rape

If you are in immediate danger of being raped, here are some things that you can do.

Make a loud noise - Carry a whistle or scream "police" to attract attention

Run - Only run if there is somewhere safe to run to. If there is no where to go you may aggravate the assailant further by running

Stall - Speak calmly and rationally. Try not to plead, cry or show that you're scared, this may be the reaction that he's going for.

Urinate or vomit - Do anything you can to repulse the assailant. Tell him that you have a STD or AIDS.

Fight - Women who resist attacks and act quickly are less likely to be raped, than those who are passive. The optimum time to react is in the first 20 seconds when the body releases chemicals in the blood that help to put up a fight. Be cautious if he has a weapon.

Keep alert - Even though it will be difficult, try to pay attention to as many details as possible, so that you can identify your assailant.

Get help - Call 9-1-1 as soon as possible. Police are becoming more willing to help victims of rape. You are not obligated to press charges or go to court.

Collect evidence - Do not bathe, shower, or douche. If you change clothes, put the clothes you were raped in into a bag and seal it.

Tell someone - Call the police, rape crisis counselor, telephone operator, friend. It is very important that someone knows and that it is not kept a secret.

A guy walked into a little corner store with a shot gun...

SSS Stupid Criminals

Sunday Funnies

Colorado Springs: A guy walked into a little corner store with a shot gun and demanded all the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag, the robber saw a bottle of scotch that he wanted behind the counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but he refused and said “Because I don’t believe you are over 21.” The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him because he didn’t believe him. At this point the robber took his driver’s license out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk. The clerk looked it over, and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and he put the scotch in the bag. The robber then ran from the store with his loot. The cashier promptly called the police and gave the name and address of the robber that he got off the license. They arrested the robber two hours later.

Taking a Taxi? Scott Security Source offers Safety tips and a Free Newsletter.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SAFETY
3 Part Series

A Public Service Report by

Public transport is normally very safe and most taxi companies are reputable licensed firms whose drivers have been vetted, so here is some advice that should help you feel more confident when traveling by bus, train, tube or taxi.

Part 3 of 3: Taking a Taxi

·         Carry the phone number of a taxi or mini cab firm you know, and whenever you book a taxi ask them for the driver's name and the type of car they will be driving
·         Try and book the taxi you need to bring you home before you go out. Give your name and when the driver arrives make sure they know the name it was booked under. If you have to book your taxi in a public place, do it quietly where people are unlikely to overhear your name and address
·         If you can, share a taxi with a friend and have your money ready and keys handy at the end of your journey so that you can enter your home quickly
·         If ever you feel uneasy in a taxi ask the driver to stop in a busy place that you know well, and get out
